Who Can Apply: Educational Qualifications

The educational requirements aren’t one-size-fits-all. What you need depends entirely on which post you’re targeting.

For Most Junior Engineer Positions

You’ll need a three-year diploma in engineering from a recognized university or institute. The discipline matters:

Mechanical Engineering Stream:

Mechanical Engineering
Production Engineering
Automobile Engineering
Manufacturing Engineering
Industrial Engineering
Any combination of sub-streams in these basic disciplines

Higher qualifications like B.E/B.Tech in the same discipline work too.

Electrical Engineering Roles:

Electrical Engineering diploma
Any sub-stream combination of electrical engineering

Electronics & Allied Fields:

Electronics Engineering
Instrumentation and Control
Communication Engineering
Computer Science and Engineering
Information Technology

Civil Engineering Posts:

Three-year Civil Engineering diploma
B.Sc. in Civil Engineering (three years duration)
Sub-streams of civil engineering

For Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant

This one’s different. You need a B.Sc. degree with Physics and Chemistry (minimum 45% marks) where:

Physics is your major/specialization/Honours subject with Chemistry as a subject, OR
Chemistry is your major with Physics as a subject, OR
Any other science subject as major with both Physics and Chemistry in the course

For Depot Material Superintendent

Any three-year engineering diploma works. This gives you flexibility if you have a diploma in disciplines not covered by other JE categories.

Important: The certificate must be dated on or before November 30, 2025. According to Ministry of Education guidelines, only degrees from recognized institutions are valid.

Age Limits That Actually Matter

Here’s where it gets specific. Your age is calculated as on January 1, 2026.

Basic Age Bracket

Minimum Age: 18 years (born not after January 1, 2008)
Maximum Age: 33 years for General/EWS candidates (born not earlier than January 2, 1993)

Age Relaxation for Reserved Categories

SC/ST Candidates: 38 years maximum (5 years relaxation)

OBC-NCL Candidates: 36 years maximum (3 years relaxation)

Ex-Servicemen: This gets complicated

General/EWS: 3 years after deducting service length
OBC-NCL: 6 years after deducting service length
SC/ST: 8 years after deducting service length

PwBD Candidates:

UR/EWS: 43 years (10 years relaxation)
OBC-NCL: 46 years (13 years relaxation)
SC/ST: 48 years (15 years relaxation)

Railway Employees: If you’re already working in Group C or erstwhile Group D with minimum 3 years service:

UR/EWS: Up to 40 years
OBC-NCL: Up to 43 years
SC/ST: Up to 45 years

One relaxation that often gets overlooked – female candidates who are widowed, divorced, or judicially separated (but not remarried) get relaxation up to 35 years (UR/EWS), 38 years (OBC-NCL), or 40 years (SC/ST).

Key Point: If you qualify for multiple relaxations, you get the maximum applicable – not cumulative benefits.

Medical Fitness Standards You Can’t Ignore

Railway jobs have strict medical requirements. Three main categories exist:

Medical Standard A-3 (Most Stringent)

Distance Vision: 6/9, 6/9 with/without glasses (max 2D power)
Near Vision: Sn 0.6, 0.6 with/without glasses
Must pass color vision, binocular vision, night vision, and mesopic vision tests

Critical: If you’ve had LASIK surgery, you’re not eligible for A-3 standard posts.

Medical Standard B-1

Distance Vision: 6/9, 6/12 with/without glasses (max 4D power)
Near Vision: Sn 0.6, 0.6 with/without glasses
Must pass all vision tests

LASIK candidates may qualify here if surgery was at least one year ago and residual corneal thickness is minimum 425 microns.

Medical Standard C-1

Distance Vision: 6/12, 6/18 with/without glasses
Near Vision: Sn 0.6, 0.6 with/without glasses

Reservation Benefits and Certificates You’ll Need

Vertical Reservation

EWS (Economically Weaker Section): Family income below Rs. 8 lakh for financial year 2024-25
SC/ST: Valid caste certificate required
OBC-NCL: Certificate issued on or after April 1, 2025 but before November 30, 2025

OBC candidates pay attention: Your certificate must specifically state you don’t belong to the creamy layer. Plus, your caste must appear in the central OBC list at ncbc.nic.in.

Horizontal Reservation

Ex-Servicemen: Need at least six months continuous service after attestation. Those retiring within one year of closing date can also apply.

PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities): Minimum 40% disability required. Suitability varies by post – check the detailed vacancy table.

Nationality Requirements

You must be either:

A citizen of India
A citizen of Nepal
A subject of Bhutan
A Tibetan refugee (settled before January 1, 1962)
A person of Indian origin from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or East African countries

Categories beyond Indian citizens need a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India.

What Disqualifies You

Multiple applications: Apply to more than one RRB? All applications get rejected, plus you’re debarred from future exams.
Currently debarred: If any RRB/RRC has debarred you, don’t apply.
Dismissed from government service: Previous dismissal makes you ineligible.
Awaiting results: If you haven’t received your final qualification results by November 30, 2025, you can’t apply.

Application Fees and Concessions

General Candidates: Rs. 500 (Rs. 400 refunded after attending CBT)

Concessional Category: Rs. 250 (fully refunded after attending CBT) for:

SC/ST candidates
Ex-Servicemen
PwBD candidates
Female candidates
Transgender candidates
Minorities
Economically Backward Class (EBC) – different from EWS

Important for EBC: You need an income certificate showing family income below Rs. 50,000, issued before November 30, 2025.

Selection Process Overview

The recruitment happens in stages:

First Stage CBT: 100 questions, 90 minutes (screening test)
Second Stage CBT: 150 questions, 120 minutes (based on your discipline)
Document Verification: Original certificates checked
Medical Examination: Railway medical authorities conduct tests

Negative marking applies: 1/3 mark deducted for every wrong answer.

Minimum qualifying marks:

UR/EWS: 40%
OBC-NCL: 30%
